The piece of innovation I am choosing to view through the lens of the diffusion theory is online shopping. Before researching, I thought the earliest piece of innovation when it came to online shopping would be in the time frame of the late 1980's to 1990's. But actually, it was first recorded in the 1960's. It was used by IBM on their online transaction processing. It allowed the processing of financial transactions in real time. This system starting out was used by companies like American Airlines. When the emergence of the internet came about, the use of online shopping was more used for advertising companies products. But after 1994, this advertising changed into the online shopping that we know of today. Some of the earliest sales recorded online were linked to flowers, chocolates, even album sales for the famous performer, Sting. The biggest concern in online shopping during its early days was the security. Shoppers did not want to give their information to a random person. In addition, everyone was used to buying things they had already touched or seen. Once those concerns were resolved and security was proved to be valid, online shopping went into a boom. The main reason for the spread and boom of online shopping is because it has made buying products you need or want extremely easy. Saves the average person a lot of time just buying a product on amazon instead of just going out to the store. So many early adopters chose this route of online shopping because of how it saved them time from their day, in addition to making their lives easier. Some people are late adopters because maybe they were not familiar with how to use online shopping correctly, or even some didn’t even know how to get onto the online web! Some non-adapters fall into the category of not knowing how to use the internet or they do not have the resources to access technology like this. But some non adapters can also tie into the negative consequences of online shopping. Due to its sharp increase over the decades, a lot of businesses have had to close due to people not shopping at their stores anymore. Lots of people say why go out to the store when I can get it online? So the biggest negative of online shopping is that it hurts small store owners. That is why some people choose to be non adapters, so that they can keep giving business to small store owners! Which I think is a great idea, supporting small businesses over buying from amazon and other large tycoons. I believe the use of amazon from time to time is fine. But it is also important to keep in mind to go out of your way to support small businesses.
